The SilkE Web

Or, How Evan Got His Car

An industrial espionage case becomes deadly in this fast-paced mystery/thriller from the author of LIES.

Evan Flynn, a young advertising executive, thinks someone is following him. He’s bothered, because he can think of no reason he’d be followed, unless, as his friend and co-worker Lance says, “Maybe your lovely wife Ally suspects you of some indiscretion.” Ha, ha, Lance. She knows better.

Then Eric’s home is broken into; some jewelry and his work laptop are stolen. That’s bad, but when a body is found on the hillside near his home, and the jewelry is found near the dead man, Ally and Eric feel frightened and vulnerable, unsafe in their own home. Ally, is especially upset, made worse because Evan had neglected to tell her about being followed. They are convinced it’s all connected, somehow.

But it’s after he is accused of stealing proprietary information from his client that Evan finds himself literally fighting for his job, his marriage, and his life. And he’s not going to win them all.

LIES

Eric is aging, well but not happily. The thing is, he’s been lonely since his wife died, so when he’s given the opportunity to invest in a real estate deal, he jumps. Not only does the deal sound good financially, but it gives him something to do.

He knows that it was a mistake to bring his brother into the deal; Kevin had problems of his own and didn’t deserve what happened to him. Worse was what happed to Eric’s old business acquaintance. And that poor young woman, that was a tragedy. My God, who could have known? It was just a business deal, after all. Gone bad, obviously. Very bad. But Eric
didn’t do anything wrong. Did he?

Oh, and one other thing–if you mistake a fantasy for a memory, does it become a lie?

Runner Boy

What if the lights go out—and never come back on?

When an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) knocks out all electricity and almost everything electronic, including communication, lights, heat, water, and most transportation, the Gruens find themselves in a quandary. Their oldest daughter, Chrissie, is 180 miles away at college and they have no way to contact her to know if she’s all right, or even to know if she’s alive. When their food and water start to run out and their house is attacked, they decide to leave home to go find her.

The story is told by sixteen-year-old Brady Gruen, who is a bit of a slacker in a family of achievers. He’s at first reluctant to leave home and his friends despite the growing danger. But he comes to realize that nothing will ever go back to the way it was.

The Gruens quickly learn that the trip to find Chrissie is not going to be easy. They get trapped on the wrong side of the Ohio River. They’re accosted by gas thieves, shot at and chased by gangs on the interstate, and nearly blown up by a rocket launched from a fighter jet. And that’s just the first day.

There are many questions to be answered, including who or what caused the EMP, and the obvious one: will they ever find Chrissie? But for Brady, even more important is this: when he is asked to step up, how will he react? And, when it’s his time, will he come through?
